Nandi Hills and Savandurga: two climbs beyond Bengaluru

Nandi Hills and Savandurga are both familiar escapes from Bengaluru, but they ask for different kinds of attention. Nandi layers temple, fortification and viewpoint on a cool hilltop. Savandurga is more elemental: open granite, painted route marks and a horizon that expands with every step.

Nandidurga above the plain

Nandi Hills was historically known as Nandidurga and its height made it strategically valuable long before sunrise tourism. Gates, walls and sacred sites remain among gardens and viewpoints. The nearby Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple adds a deeper architectural timeline at the foot of the hill. Arriving early reveals both the attraction and the pressure: mist can be beautiful, but busy roads and crowded edges demand patience.

Walking the granite at Savandurga

Savandurga's trail crosses broad slabs rather than a conventional forest path. The rock gives uninterrupted views but little shelter, and wet surfaces can become dangerous. From higher ground, the Arkavathi basin, forest and reservoirs replace the city's dense horizon. The climb rewards an early start, conservative pacing and a willingness to turn back when heat or rain changes the conditions.

Two nearby landscapes, not interchangeable trips

Treating both as generic viewpoints misses their character. Nandi is a cultural landscape with active shrines and built heritage; Savandurga is a strenuous outdoor route on exposed rock. Their proximity to Bengaluru makes access easier, not impact smaller. Local opening rules, waste discipline and weather checks are essential parts of the day.
